Resolve to Speak Creatively in 2009!

Every year on New Year’s Eve, my favorite list comes out. It’s the list of “banished words and phrases” – tired, overused verbage that we resolve (usually unsuccessfully) to leave behind as we head into the new year. On the top of this year’s list:
- Going green (I am certain we’ll take this into 2009)
- Wall Street/Main Street (thank goodness the election is over, and so too is this tired phrase)
- First Dude (again, thank goodness…)
- Maverick (hate to see this lovely word turned into a punchline)
- 24/7
- At the end of the day (I think most “business speak” should be banned forever – 24/7)
I’d love to hear the words and phrases that YOU resolve to leave in 2008!

“You Betcha” *wink*
My personal tic is the overuse of “absolutely” as the reply to any question in the affirmative.
Claire – You and I share the “absolutely” hot button! It has been come a crutch – a stall – as people try to think of what they REALLY want to say. And perhaps you’ve noticed, as I have, that they only agree “absolutely” with you about 30% of the time! It’s become meaningless.
The word I’d like to have banished because it’s constantly misused is “literally,” as in I was laughing so hard I was literally rolling in the aisle, or I literally fell off my chair. Hmmm, probably not. Last night I overheard someone say “I was literally floating on cloud 9.” Really? It literally drives me nuts.
Oh Carol, that’s a HUGE one! I’d like to see us put that one away in 2009. Literally!
