On Commencement Speeches

I’m a commencement speech junkie. I like to study all kinds of speeches, but grad night speeches always appeal to my inner softie. I imagine myself – fresh-faced at 22; whole world ahead of me – taking in one of this month’s commencement addresses. I can get choked-up pretty quickly listening to all of those well-worded challenges and inspiring prose. Then I listen to it retrospectively. Because I am so far from that fresh-faced 22-year old, I can now distinguish wisdom from hyperbole.
I also read all the commencement speech reviews. This one by speechwriter Fletcher Dean is my favorite, and I appreciate that he put so many the best (and worst) speeches in one place for me. Enjoy!
