Next week, I’ll be conducting a workshop at the Murrow Symposium, for Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communications.  I’ll be joined by prestigious colleagues - leaders in TV and radio. Our focus will be helping new communications graduates to land their first jobs in broadcast news.

It’s going to be harder for this group of grads than it has ever been. Journalism - print and broadcast - is going through an unprecedented sea-change. According to news directors and editors from all over the country, the jobs disappearing from newsrooms are not likely to return. Ever. The days of the million-dollar anchor are numbered in a few markets - and gone in the rest. Many reporters are now shooting their own stories, and uploading them to the web. They’re blogging and twittering. And doing it for a lot less money.

The good news is that this environment is an easier fit for these students than it is for the old dogs in TV - who are still trapped in their “back in the day..” memories of the broadcast news business.  Still, today’s grads will be diving into the deep end of an evaporating pool.

I’m eager to hear from them what causes them, despite the odds, to dream of a career in broadcast news.
