Think the Spoken Word Doesn’t Matter? Ask Caroline Kennedy

We may never know for sure why Caroline Kennedy backed out of her bid to fill the vacant New York senate seat. The timing was odd; it became clear that she wasn’t the choice anyway. It smacked of the old “You can’t fire me, I quit” routine.  What we do know is that the more New Yorkers heard from her, the less they seemed to connect with her.

I’ve heard many of Caroline Kennedy’s speeches. They’ve been alright. Her voice grates, but she speaks the words well. But in a conversational setting, such as an interview, she’s uh, well, ya know.. awful.  She seems distracted, dismissive and the litany of “ya knows” sounds sophomoric.

I remember back to her book tour, after she penned a lovely tribute to The Bill of Rights. I don’t recall that she sounded so shallow then. Perhaps it’s because, after working so long on the book, she really did know her stuff. Maybe this winter, when she found herself in the deep end of the political pool, it turned out she really didn’t know her stuff. Perhaps her stammering delivery just filled the void between her brain and her mouth.

She has the name; she has experience through osmosis, if nothing else. I’m convinced that if she believed that the spoken word was vital to success, and worth the time and effort to perfect, the junior senator from New York would be a Kennedy.
